On the isthmus between Lago Piccolo and Lago Grande stands the Benedictine abbey of Monticchio, dating from the 10th-11th centuries.
The church, with its three-lobed apse and atrium to which the bell tower was added at a later date, can be traced back to this period.
The imposing silhouette of the Norman-Swabian castle is the symbol of Melfi, and its history is bound up with the prominent figures who have succeeded one another over the centuries in the city nestled on the slopes of Monte Vulture.
A picturesque path leads through the dense woods to the convent, which, perched on the Vulture caldera, overlooks Lago Piccolo, offering a pleasant contrast to the surrounding nature.
It was built by the Franciscans starting in the 17th century on a much older site. It incorporates the Basilian lavras, and in particular the Great Cave carved into the tuff and dedicated to the archangel Michael. Votive deposits dating back to the 4th-3rd centuries BC have been discovered nearby.
